About us
The Japanese Association for Machinami Conservation and Regeneration (Zenkoku Machinami Hozon Renmei) is a private non-profit corporation composed of local groups that are working on historic conservation and regeneration in their historic towns and villages, and individuals who support the groups.
In 1974 (Showa 49), the three local groups from ARIMATSU, IMAI and TSUMAGO formed and have been active under the slogan, "Machinami is Everyone's Common Property". "Machinami" is Japanese for Historic Urban Landscape.
In 1978 (Showa 53), the first national conference was held in Arimatsu and Asuke. With the 5th National Conferene in Tokyo as a turning pint, we started the individual membership system and the publication of the bulletin: Machinami Kawaraban. In 2000, we drafted "The ‘Machinami Charter’: Charter for the Conservation of Historic Towns and Settlements of Japan" and adopted it as the basic policy for our activities. In 2003, we were certified as a specified non-profit organization.
In 2024, we will celebrate our 50th anniversary
