The 45th National Conference in NIIGATA City

      The 45th National Conference in Niigata City was held on June 11th and 12th, 2022, with a total of 400 participants, including about 200 from outside the prefecture, in the town of Ryuto, Niigata. As the title suggests, “Historic urban conservation through civic activities: Thinking from the port town of Niigata”, it was an epoch-making event that opened up new prospects for historical town development.

      In Niigata, civic movements such as the Niigata Town Heritage Association have produced results, and the preservation and utilization of historic buildings have progressed. Sakyukan (formerly the residence of the head of the Bank of Japan branch), which was the venue for the relay talk held on the afternoon of the previous day, the 10th, to look back on the 44 years of the national conference, is one of the results.

　The six subcommittees, which began in the afternoon of the first day, were managed by the organizations involved in these activities, and the participants were divided into six districts in central Niigata, and after walking around the town, each participated in a panel discussion.

　Since the conference was held over two days and one night, the role of the branch sessions on the first day has increased dramatically. IIn this session, the themes were well designed, the participation of suitable panelists was obtained, and substantial discussions unfolded. The “Niigata Declaration” summarized the results obtained in this way as follows:

　"This conference produced epoch-making results in which citizens cooperated, traced the history of the city, utilized the historical heritage left behind with the fullest imagination, and created a vision of how to create a historical community that opens up the next era. ”
